Superintendent Persona

The superintendent is the central persona in the construction site, responsible for managing all the workers, schedules and coordinations.

Our goal was to learn more about his day to day, understand how he creates and consumes the information on site, and identify key opportunities for innovation.

Fly on the wall

Following the superintendents while performing their daily tasks. One of the key insights was the amount of demand for their attention, and the constant need to stay focused and answer questions.

A day in a life

We used A Day in a Life session with the superintendents, to describe their day from the time they woke up, to the time they go to sleep. Their descriptions made it evident that they are probably the busiest people on site, taking only 10 minutes for lunch, at best. In addition, superintendents are highly concerned with safety and are always alert.

Synthesis

The first stage was creating a Research Nuggets table. Each nugget records an observation which can be easily filtered, sorted and accessed for future use.

We then took our key findings from the table, and clustered similar themes together.

Next, we used the Jobs to be Done workflow, to list customers jobs, pains and gains.

Opportunity

An interesting point that came up, was that all superintendents used the BIM 360 app on the job site, yet still used other tools, both digital and non digital, to communicate and initiate workflows, such as issues and RFIs (Request for Information - an official inquiry).

When using BIM 360, users must choose and commit to a workflow. The problem with this,

is that they often didn't have enough information to make a decision at that point, or preferred to add this information later, while not on-site.
